I guess you could call me a Foodie. I suppose it's a more compact term than Chubby Guy Who Knows All the Good Places to Eat. I'm always fascinated by what people eat in movies. Star Wars is no exception. There are a few scenes involving food. I have issues with most of them.
The first and one of the better examples is the scene where Luke eats with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. It's one of the few scenes of domestic life in the trilogy. They drink what appears to be some blue milk and are eating some sort of glop. You also see Aunt Beru trimming some sort of vegetable or something. They also have some sort of hyrdroponic garden in the middle of their dwelling. Their whole set up seems well thought out and their way of life interesting. I'm not sure what they do for protein though. They don't have any herd animals that we can see and there can't be too much wildlife in the desert. Luke does make an allusion to some kind of animal called a womp rat. In fact, he claims he "used to bullseye womp rats back home" later in the movie. Perhaps they eat womp rats. The Sand People and Jawas make it somehow though so there must be food somewhere.
Of course the Cantina scene shows that people on Tatooine do like their drinks, even if they don't like drinking them with droids present. For some reason the Cantina reminds me of the bar in the movie Rush. All it's missing is Greg Allman moving sniff out of the back.
One of my favorite scenes is when Luke lands in Dagobah system to meet up with Yoda. He crashes into the swamp but manages to get a lot of supplies and R2 onto dry land. Among his supplies is a metal container that looks like a tackle box. In it is a variety of food stuffs and what he pulls out first looks suspiciously like an overdue Circle K hot dog. Yoda is all over it when he shows up, so it must taste good. Maybe it's like cat nip for Yodas, or pizza for fat guys. Presumably this is some sort of military ration box. He left Hoth for Dagobah so he's a full fledged member of the Rebellion and was probably issued this mess kit. None of what's in it looks like food at all. In fact, you can see it fairly clearly in this scene, it looks like a collection of cat toys and snacks.
The last segment I feel like commenting on is the amazing scene in Jabba's hide out. I love Jabba the Hutt, he's got a weird muppet at his side on the constant, some kind of space bong that he is seriously toking on, and a little bowl of chewy frogs in water. He's got it made! I tried to find a clip of him popping those frogs in his mouth but I kept turning up videos of actual frogs eating mice and shit. Boring. I think later, on the barge he has some sort of tall glass full of a thick black beverage. Maybe they stopped at Applebee's on the way to the Sarlacc pit and he kept his yard of Guinness. You're not supposed to do that Jabba! What a scamp.
